Embassy assisting Iggy's family

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine embassy in London is assisting the family of Negros Occidental Rep. Ignacio “Iggy” Arroyo in the repatriation of his remains, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said yesterday.

However, DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez clarified, “We have yet to be informed of the schedule and other details of his repatriation.”

The lawmaker succumbed to cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment for liver ailment at the age of 60.

Edgar Ruado, Arroyo’s congressional chief of staff, said many documentary requirements, including clearances from the London Clinic, and other procedures need to be completed before the lawmaker’s remains could be flown back to the country.

Meanwhile, former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo wants to visit the wake of her brother-in-law and will seek permission from the Pasay City Regional Trial Court to do so, former first gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo said yesterday.

Arroyo is detained at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City on electoral sabotage charges.

Mike Arroyo also appealed for respect and privacy amid reports of bickering between his brother’s estranged wife Alicia and Grace Ibuna, his companion the last four years.

Ibuna was with Iggy at the time of his death.

He also said he would not intervene in the reported row between Alicia and Grace.

“I’m keeping my hands off that. I also appeal to all concerned to respect our privacy,” Mike said. – With Paolo Romero
