DepEd, Smart launch video blog tilt

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) and telecommunications giant Smart Communications have launched a video blogging contest dubbed “Doon Po sa Amin” to promote information communications technology (ICT) for education.

“This is a very exciting contest as it brings out the best in teachers and students in producing a video blog site that touches on the many aspects of community life,” Education Secretary Armin Luistro said.

“The topic categories include environment and disaster preparedness, arts and culture, history and society, as well as travel and cuisine,” he said.

In the Doon Po Sa Amin project of the Smart Schools Program, teacher-student teams perform basic community mapping exercises to create video blogs that feature a community’s culture and character.

Luistro said the contest promotes ICT integration in basic education and seeks to encourage teachers and students to use local content in curriculum applications.

The contest is open to teachers and students from both public and private secondary schools nationwide.

“It will surely help develop our students’ skills in research, writing, creativity, teamwork and use of ICT in telling the unique stories of their respective communities,” Luistro added.

The grand prize is P30,000 while category winners will get P10,000 each. There will also be a special award of P5,000 each for best video blog site design and layout, best in team collaboration, best in ICT integration and best in community involvement.

The winners will be invited to exhibit their entries during the Doon Po Sa Amin awarding ceremony in Manila in February next year.

The deadline for contest registration is Aug. 30.
