Celebrities join protest vs foie gras

MANILA, Philippines – A number of local celebrities have joined the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia-Pacific’s protest against ducks and geese that are being overfed to turn their liver into the delicacy called foie gras (fat liver).

Among the celebrities who committed to PETA’s boycott of foie gras are Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla; models Isabel Roces, Raya Mananquil, Corey Wills, and Blanca Valerio; comedienne Rufa Mae Quinto, actresses Alicia Mayer and Yasmien Kurdi and veteran actor Eddie Gutierrez.

The animal-rights group is hoping that the fans of these celebrities would join them in their advocacy.

Ducks and geese are reportedly brutally force-fed using pipes to stuff the food down their throats, resulting in enlarged livers. Some of the animals reportedly sustained holes in their necks from pipe injuries.

“Force-feeding birds until their organs explode is one of the most violent forms of cruelty to animals in factory farms today,” said PETA campaign manager Rochelle Regodon.   Evelyn Macairan, Irene Amador
