In a motion filed at the anti-graft court’s special division, PNP chief Director General Oscar Calderon said all police units have been directed to strengthen security measures in vital installations to preempt "threat groups" from taking advantage of the Lenten season.
"Moreover, other considerations and the precautionary measures shall also be taken into account by the PNP, particularly the (Police Security and Protection Office) to ensure his safety and security," read the motion.
"But the PNP could no longer detail additional personnel for Estrada should he be allowed to leave his detention since aside from Holy Week activities, the PNP has other important concerns that require the participation of more warm bodies."
Calderon said police nationwide are on heightened alert status in consonance with Letter of Instruction (LI) 06-97 or the "Bantay Lakbay" program.
As a result, policemen, except in cases of emergency and the need to preserve public order and safety, may not be deployed outside their offices or stations during the Holy Week, Calderon said.
Director Romeo Hilomen, Police Security and Protection Office chief, said if the court would grant Estrada’s request for medical treatment during the Holy Week, his movement from his detention place in Tanay, Rizal to the Asian Hospital will necessitate the deployment and utilization of more policemen than what is required if he shall remain under house arrest.
Sources at the Sandiganbayan disclosed that the anti-graft court deferred coming out with a resolution on Estrada’s request for medical treatment due to the holiday break.
Dr. Lorenzo Hocson, Estrada’s personal physician, has recommended that his patient undergo further tests for diagnosis and treatment of his persistent chest and low back pains. – Sandy Araneta
