A total 29,918 graduating high school students belonging to the top five percent of their batches took the scholarship examination. Out of this number, 3,863 qualifiers have been named to the scholarship slots available.
"The Department of Science and Technology, through the Science Education Institute, continues its efforts to create a qualified pool of manpower to operate the country’s wheels of industrialization by providing scholarships to deserving students who wish to pursue S&T courses in the tertiary level," Alabastro said.
The S&T program under Republic Act 7687 awards scholarships in baccalaureate degrees and three-year technician courses. This is given to poor, talented and deserving students in various congressional districts and municipalities all over the country.
This year, 3,559 examinees qualify under the program while the DOST-SEI undergraduate program, which provides BS scholarships in priority S&T courses, has 304 awardees for 2001.
The scholarship privileges for both programs include school fees, book and transportation allowances and monthly stipends among others.
