A must-see film for lent
What better way to officially begin the Lenten season than by watching “In Thy Name,” a movie about unwavering faith and martyrdom, which opens on Ash Wednesday (March 5). It tells the story of Father Rhoel Gallardo, a Claretian priest who was abducted by the Abu Sayyaf along with students and faculty members in Basilan back in March 2000.
Now, 25 years later, we will find out what transpired up in the mountains where the captives were detained until the decisive battle between the military and the terrorists. Topbilled by Mccoy de Leon, John Estrada, Jerome Ponce, Mon Confiado, JC De Vera, Pen Medina and Alex Medina, the film is a love story of God and His people through Father Rhoel’s bravery and faith. It serves to inspire ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
Here’s my chat with Alex:
What did you learn from the character you portrayed?
I had so much fun researching about the character, Teacher Rosebert. He was often mistaken for a soldier because of his physique and hairstyle. He provided comic relief in a tense atmosphere. My portrayal was very cathartic for me. And that’s how every role should be, in some way a release not just for the actor, but for the people watching it as well.
If Father Roel was still alive, what would you want to ask him?
I’d like to know how deep his faith is, and how he withstood everything that he went through and if his faith ever wavered.
Will you still pursue your dream of becoming a rock star and do you plan to revive your Alex in Wonderland band?
Making it big in a band was one of my dreams but when I became a father, I realized that dream had to die. But in its wake, I think what’s important is learning how to play music. That’s the crucial part that I wasn’t able to do when I was young. I still want to pursue my dream of making music, as opposed to being a rockstar.
What was the toughest part of stepping out of your dad’s (Pen Medina) shadow?
It was never pressure for me to step out of that shadow because it helped me a lot with my career. I don’t mind staying in the shade. I think it’s more important to find yourself creatively, because once you find that thing that you feel sets you apart from anyone’s shadow, everything else is just white noise.
