MTV awards winners

It was the first time for MTV. Those initials actually mean Music Television and should concern itself mainly with music but it had been also giving out movie awards these past years. Then last year MTV decided to also give awards to TV shows and those other shows created for streaming in assorted screens. And it was nice to find out that everything turned out well during the show held last May 7 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, or I should say, early Monday morning May 8 here in the Philippines as seen on MTV Pinoy.

But it turned that that awarding the streaming films was not the only important first at this year’s MTV Movie and TV Awards. A first too was giving the most coveted award of the evening, the MTV Generation Award to a movie franchise, The Fast And Furious (F&F), instead of to a star or to an institution. Last year’s recipient was Will Smith. So time to keep watch as to which franchise, X-Men, Harry Potter, Marvel, Spiderman, etc. etc. will be similarly honored in the future.

Still Vin Diesel’s acceptance speech was a touching moment in the show. He called in his Fast And Furious family on stage and then reminisced about his brother Pablo. Pablo was, of course, Paul Walker who starred in six out of eight F&F flicks and tragically perished in a car crash four years ago. The eighth film of the series, the currently showing The Fate of the Furious, is another certified box-office hit.

Also a first was disregarding gender and not categorizing individual awards as male or female. Emma Watson called attention to this in her acceptance speech as Best Actor in a Movie for her work in the live action musical Beauty and the Beast. The picture also won the Movie of the Year award. So no more Best Actor or Best Actress. From now on it is just plain actor. Just like Best Host or Best Villain. All are equal at MTV. Incidentally, Best Actor in a Show winner was Millie Bobby Brown of the series Stranger Things which airs on Netflix. She is also female and only 11 years old.

Emma, who by the way, looked smart and beautiful that night, accepted her popcorn trophy right after the opening number which parodied Beauty and the Beast. First time host Adam Devine played Beast with Hailee Steinfeld as Beauty, Rebel Wilson as a huge teapot Mrs. Potts and Josh Gad in a reprise of his Le Fou role in the picture. It was a fun moment that clinched Devine’s new role as MTV Movie and TV Awards host. He will surely turn up again in future shows.
