Pilita Corrales is lasting Queen of Song

Singers come and go, but Pilita Corrales stays on top. From the ’50s up to this very day, Asia’s Queen of Song — a most deserved accolade — enchants and mesmerizes as recording star and concert artist. Pilita sings Pilipino, English and Spanish tune, be they ballad or novelty, classic or contemporary.

In an article penned in the late ’60s, George F. Sison wrote on ills plaguing the recording industry, but names one singer, Pilita, who rode over them and made a name here and abroad. Sison wrote a song especially for Pilita in a long-play album.

Aside from recording and concertizing, Pilita hosted on TV the long-running An Evening with Pilita, which opened with her signature song, A Million Thanks to You. Up to now, she still appears on television albeit in sitcoms. But she is willing, ready and able to host another TV musical.

Pilita also starred in several movies, including the 1967 The Juke Box Queen, which she was when the music machine was in vogue.

A few months back, this columnist presented Pilita at the CCP, in Harana sa Dapithapon, and the reception was overwhelming.

‘Walang katulad, walang kupas si Pilita’ is the consensus of the well-heeled and well-dressed audience. — RKC
