Possibly the most successful invention to strike the Philippine entertainment sector is Jeepney TV, named after the jeepney, a vehicle widely used as transportation in the Philippines. Jeepney TV is a Filipino cable television network owned and operated by Creative Programs, Inc., subsidiary of media conglomerate ABS-CBN Corp. When it was first introduced in the country in October of 2012, the channel quickly became associated with the best in previously aired material on ABS-CBN and became known as the home of throwback Philippine television shows.
Jeepney TV was already given an award for Biyaheng Retro two months after the network’s launch in October 2012. The material offers viewers a look at famous personalities in the entertainment industry before and after their rise to fame. Other awards garnered went to Mario Dumaual as 2014 Best Entertainment News Show Host for Biyaheng Retro, Best AM Radio Anchor to DZMM’s Ted Failon and to Ted’s show Failon Ngayon as Best AM Radio Program. Meanwhile, Anthony Taberna was voted Outstanding Male News Presenter, and Atom Araullo was honored as Best Male Field Reporter of the Year and finally Best Morning Show was given to Umagang Kay Ganda.
We also found the channel entering the field of international programs. Recently, Jeepney TV forged a deal with the Japanese government (through Sumitomo Corp.) to air prime Japanese programs from its major networks. Bannered as Lakbay Japan, the deal consisted of 60 hours of original Japanese TV shows shown for the first time on Philippine TV.
Meanwhile, for hopeless romantics, the perfect show would be Fukuoka Love Stories which premieres on Valentine’s Day. The program is a series of real-life stories submitted by viewers in Fukuoka about their personal experiences with love, loss and longing.
Those who are still looking for the original intentions of Jeepney TV to replay popular materials, there is Ryan Ryan Musikahan which will hold a concert in tribute to the iconic musical program of the ‘80s. With the show’s re-airing on Jeepney TV in 2012, it had been hoped that Ryan’s music would appeal to a new generation of viewers. Finally, there had been a re-airing of Palibhasa Lalake over Jeepney TV, bringing a daily dose of nostalgia. It is great to once again catch Richard Gomez, Joey Marquez, John Estrada, Gloria Romero and many others.
To us, we look forward to watching replays of those we had missed or those we have loved to watch over and over again. One of these shows is 100 Days to Heaven which tells the story of an ambitious woman (played by Coney Reyes) whose greed and treatment of others left her with no friends. When she died, God’s decision was to send her back to earth to right all the wrongs she had committed while still alive.
