Born To Be Wild’s Thailand, Maldives expedition

MANILA, Philippines - Today, Doc Nielsen Donato and Doc Ferds Recio (photo) encounter the big fish of Thailand and Maldives in Born To Be Wild on GMA 7.

In Thailand’s man-made lakes, Doc Nielsen is searching for a species of fish notorious for its strength. In its native South America, the fish is said to be strong enough to topple fishermen. The monstrous fish that can grow up to 15 feet in length is called the arapaima. Doc Nielsen comes face to face with the giant fish and finds out why it is capable of wiping out smaller fish species. And while the existence of the arapaima in Thailand is not yet considered a threat by local residents, in the Philippines, a fish this size can easily wreak havoc in natural rivers and lakes.

Meanwhile, Doc Ferds finds out more about the marine life of Maldives. Unlike other countries that have birds or mammals as a national icon, Maldives’ natural animal is a fish. The tuna, one of the most sought after in the world market, is harvested in Maldives every day.
