Mutya beauties are set for tilts abroad

Glennifer ‘Glen’ Perido, 22, from Tabuk City, Kalinga, will compete in the 2014/2015 Miss Tourism International pageant in Kuala Lumpur on Dec. 31.

Four done, a few more to go before the year ends.

Jamie Herrell won Miss Earth, the second Filipina (and Cebuana) to bag the title, while Kris Tiffany Janson finished second runner-up at the Miss Intercontinental. Sadly, Bianca Guidotti failed to fulfill the back-to-back win prediction in the 2014 Miss International pageant in Japan, with Miss Puerto Rico Valerie Matias taking the crown from the Philippines’ Bea Rose Santiago. It remains to be seen if Valerie Weigmann will succeed in keeping the Miss World crown (currently held by Megan Young) for the Philippines at the grand finals on Sunday, Dec. 14, in London.

The prospects look brighter for our two Mutya beauties:

• Glennifer “Glen” Perido (Tourism) who was scheduled to leave via Cebu Pacific yesterday for Kuala Lumpur for the 2014-2015 Miss Tourism International pageant on Dec. 31. (Reigning queen is the Philippines’ Angeli Dione Gomez who will be in KL to turn over her crown to the new winner. Angeli won back-to-back with Rizzini Alexis Gomez [not related to Angeli], the previous year’s title-holder.)

• Eva Psychee Patalinjug (Asia-Pacific International) who will leave on Jan. 8 next year for the Top Model of the World (TMW) competition in Qingdao, People’s Republic of China.

Glen, 22, is from Tabuk City, Kalinga. Her mother is an OFW. Glen is a nurse and instead of working abroad, she said she’d rather fulfill her dream of helping her kababayan. Mutya ng Pilipinas (MP) is the franchisee of Miss Tourism International which was kicked off in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, in 1994. “I believe that Mutya ng Pilipinas is a great venue for my advocacy in line with that of the pageant’s which is ‘Beauty Tourism,’” said Glen who, if she wins, will start her reign on Jan. 1, 2015.

A Cebu native, Eva, 20, is an RN (Registered Nurse) who graduated valedictorian in grade school and high school. She’s currently a youth leader in Cebu. Her father is an incumbent elected City Government official and her mother is a lawyer. The TMW is an international competition for the ultimate model which began in 1993.

The Mutya organizers are thankful to San Miguel Corporation (SMC) which has been consistently supporting the quest for many years now.

Incidentally, MP has produced beauties who went on to win pageants in their own countries which they represented in other contests, namely Koreen Medina, named 2013 Mutya ng Pilipinas-Asia Pacific who was hailed Miss Asia & Oceania during the Miss Intercontinental pageant in Germany in which 59 beauties competed; and Fil-Am Maureen Ann Montagne, 2013 Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism International/Intercontinental first runner-up, was recently crowned 2015 Miss Arizona-USA at the 63rd annual beauty pageant. Maureen is a professional model who hails from Chandler, a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. She will compete in the 2015 Miss USA contest.

What’s up?

•As one of the principal sponsors, a controversial TV host was given two pieces of fabrics (one for the gown and the other for the gown’s lining) for her dress on the wedding night, courtesy of the bride who gave the other sponsors the same items. Imagine how surprised everybody was when the TV host showed up wearing a gown different from those of the other sponsors. It turned out that she saved the lace material for the gown and asked a top couturier to use the lining for the gown.

•How come a young star turns off a lot of people? Could it be because of her bad manners? She flashes a sweet smile in front of fans and promptly smirks when she turns her back. When she’s on the plane, she doesn’t even look or answer nicely when the flight attendant asks what she wants for snacks or dinner. Maybe her older sister, who is a flight attendant, can educate her on right in-flight manners.
