MANILA, Philippines - When you hear the name Pepe Diokno (photo), his title as an award-winning film director, writer and producer from the Philippines immediately comes to mind. What a lot of people don’t know is that he surprised people close to him when he went into filmmaking, considering that he was born in a family rooted in Philippine politics.
His interest in filmmaking was a hobby that later turned into a life-long passion. Engkwentro, his thesis and debut film, received mixed reviews and did not win any awards from Cinemalaya. But he proved everybody wrong when he received the Lion of the Future Award for Best Debut Film and the Orizzonti Prize for Best Picture at the 2009 Venice Film Festival. He is also on the list of the world’s most exceptional emerging filmmakers alongside Lav Diaz and Raya Martin in the book Take 100: The Future of Film.
