MANILA, Philippines - Strokes have always been common among older people. But nowadays, they also strike at younger people more and more, indicating society’s worsening lifestyles and health conditions. The numbers are projected to double by 2030, and the public needs to be warned on this worsening problem.
Around the world, stroke is the second leading cause of death, second only to heart diseases. Strokes occur when a clot blocks the blood supply to the brain. Symptoms of a stroke include having a droopy face, the inability to lift the arms and garbled speech. Once these symptoms are detected on a person, he or she should be treated immediately, because a stroke can cause long-term side effects, such as speech and memory problems, paralysis and loss of vision.
