Katipunan wins Apollo award

MANILA, Philippines - GMA News and Public Affairs’ groundbreaking historical drama Katipunan took home the award for Best Cinematography – Long Form during the Asia Image Apollo Awards ceremony last June 18 at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. The Apollo Awards honor the best in production and post-production across the Asia-Pacific region, with a strong focus on creative and technical mastery behind the scenes.

Katipunan, which aired as an eight-part mini-series, is considered a technical masterpiece with its stunning photography, epic scope and breathtaking visual imagery into the history of the Philippine Revolution.

The winning episode titled Teresa showed the abuse suffered by a barrio lass (played by Mercedes Cabral) in the hands of a Spanish Friar (Roi Vinzon). Teresa’s subsequent death is among the events that led to Andres Bonifacio’s formation of the revolutionary group Katipunan.

The episode was directed by King Mark Baco, who has been directing and producing documentaries for the internationally-recognized program Reel Time, while the director of photography was Anthony Bernard “AB” Garcia, whose notable portfolio includes TV soaps and commercial films.
