MANILA, Philippines - Alwyn Uytingco says there is a bit of fear in portraying another gay role in the upcoming TV5 comedy-drama series "Beki Boxer."
After all, he has played gay characters a number of times now, most notable in the Ai Ai delas Alas-starrer "Ang Tanging Ina" movie franchise. But the Kapatid actor is soldiering on despite his fear of being typecast in gay roles in order to be known as a versatile actor.

"Kung ikaw, isho-showcase mo yung sarili mo bilang versatile actor -- and yun ang target ko talaga -- hindi dapat maging fear yung ma-typecast," he said during the press conference for "Beki Boxer" on Tuesday, March 25.
Because of this, the 26-year-old actor admits he plans to give gay roles a rest for "Beki Boxer." Coincidentally, he will play the character of a gay blogger in an upcoming TV5 series starring Jasmine-Curtis Smith.
"After this, plano ko, move on na ako sa gay roles. So wala munang beki for a while, para naman maiba yung magawa ko," Alwyn said.
But of course, before anything else, his focus right now is on "Beki Boxer," his biggest role in a television show so far Alwyn says comparisons to other popular gay-themed shows and movies -- particularly to GMA-7's hit 2013 drama "My Husband's Lover" -- cannot be avoided.

"I think hindi naman maiiwasan, because of the theme of the show. But, meron tayong boxing. So doon natin mailalayo ang 'Beki Boxer' with 'My Husband's Lover'," he said. "At the same time, our genre is comedy. So iba yung atake ng script, ng story. It's more fun."
Is he hoping to win a best actor award like Dennis Trillo of "My Husband's Lover?"
"Kung merong pupuntahan itong 'Beki Boxer' na ito, wala akong pipigilan d'yan. Kahit saan pa siya magpunta, todo support ako," Alwyn explained. "We're really hoping na lahat ng efforts namin is masulit. Bonus na lang siguro yung award."
"Beki Boxer" premieres March 31, Monday on TV5.
