A ‘surprise’ masquerade party for Liberty

More than a month before the big day (their mom Liberty Ilagan’s 70th birthday), sisters Happy, Love and Soeng texted select friends to join them in a “surprise” masquerade party at Manila Peninsula’s The Conservatory with a reminder to keep it a secret.

“We want to make the day a most memorable one for the best mommy in the world,” said Happy in her follow-up text message, “so make sure to be there.”

So Sunday last week, on July 7, Liberty casually walked into the venue expecting an intimate dinner, only to be “shocked” (her word) when, upon entering, she found the place a bit darkened. Then, seven little voices (those of Liberty’s grandchildren) screamed, “Happy birthday!” as the lights came on. “I choked with emotion,” Liberty recalled, adding in jest, “but I stopped myself from crying baka masira ang make-up ko.”

Actually, added Liberty, “Amalia (Fuentes) reminded me days earlier to prepare a nice gown and I thought it was for a friend who was also celebrating her birthday. Amalia didn’t hint that it was for a special event planned for me!”

Looking at Liberty now, her fans won’t believe that she has aged (albeit beautifully!) all these years, especially since her old Sampaguita movies continue to be aired on TV. Liberty (in case you have forgotten) is the daughter of the iconic director Gerry de Leon, National Artist for Cinema.

“I’m so happy and thankful to God for all the blessing,” said Liberty. “That surprise gift from my children was very memorable. It was fantastic! All my friends came. It’s so nice to feel all the love among my friends and relatives.”
