MANILA, Philippines - Joey de Leon has tried doing different shows on TV. At present, he has the long-running daily noontime show, Eat Bulaga and the weekly showbiz-oriented program, Startalk, both on GMA 7. On TV5, he is seen as occasional judge in the talent search, Talentadong Pinoy.
Recently, Joey started hosting a weekly primetime show about animals with Hayop sa Galing, which airs Saturdays at 8 p.m. on TV5. This time, he provides interesting information about different animals, complete with footage of animal incidents and interesting trivia.
Joey asks questions about animals to be answered by guest celebrities every episode. For the pilot, Ritz Azul and Martin Escudero joined Joey at Avilon Zoo, which is, so far, the weekly setting for the show.
The program asks informative trivia questions in Hayop sa Tanong. Before Lolong, what country was the biggest crocodile seen? The answer is Australia. Lolong measured 20 feet while the crocodile seen in Australia only measured 18 feet. However, Lolong already died second week of February, still of an unknown cause.
The show also gives information about animal events, animals that got into trouble, incidents involving animals and humans. Interestingly, there are many animals featured in the show like elephants, whales, crocodiles, kangaroos, bears, horses, bulls and even snakes.
What do you call the maneuver of a crocodile when it eats alive its prey? Death roll. How many times can a sea snake mate? Ten years. What snake can fly? Southeast Asian tree snake.
How many hours does it take for an African elephant to eat? Sixteen hours. How long does it take for an elephant to conceive? Twenty-four months. What do you call a young elephant? Calf.
In another portion, Animalupet provides trivia about animals and their amazing abilities. A shark can detect the smell of blood as far as a mile. A king cobra is more poisonous than a rattlesnake.
Jeepney Jackpot regulars Valeen Montenegro and Saida Diola joined Joey on the second week, while Janine Tugonon and Nicole Schmitz were the guests on the third episode.
The show also carries never-before-seen footage of incidents with unruly animals like head-butting by elephants to attack humans. Also shown was a giant octopus attacking a deep-sea diver with its tentacles. Each tentacle functions like a suction cap or is as strong as a 200-pound guy.
Then there was an elephant which got rowdy while in a parade in Kerala, India. A male elephant attacked another elephant and needed to be given tranquilizer to be sedated. It’s like a “time bomb†when an elephant gets unruly. A mahout takes care of elephants.
A diver in Florida was bitten by a shark with sharp fangs and got more than 200 stitches on his lips. While a 300-pound polar bear needed to be rescued from a high cliff where it had been stranded for three days. The polar bear, said to be an endangered animal, needed to be sedated in order to be rescued.
A boa constrictor got tired of its master and attacked him on the face after a tiring day of being photographed repeatedly by guests. Then there was also a horse, which gave a flying kick to its trainer while pulling a carriage. The horseshoe left a mark on the chest of the trainer. It was a good thing he was not seriously hurt.
In Calgary, Canada, the biggest rodeo can be found. A guy was injured when he fell from riding a bull. A bull has strength and speed. An average bull weighs over 900 kilos or like a small car. The muscles of a bull below its neck can carry a thousand pounds or as heavy as four refrigerators.
Meanwhile, jockeys in a horserace suddenly got disoriented when seagulls started to fly across the lanes causing the jockeys to fall while riding their horses. Also, a chimpanzee fell on a muddy lake and could not swim. A guest in the park saved him.
Joey is the ideal host for Hayop sa Galing since he can humor the videos that are being shown on the show, so it’s a never-boring presentation. He also shares his talent in painting.
