MANILA, Philippines - Howie Severino started his career in TV in what now feels like the dinosaur age, when only large men wielded video cameras.
Nowadays, anyone with a camera can be paparazzi, as technology has enabled the masses to shoot via small phone cameras and distribute their videos and photos of crimes, crashes and even domestic quarrels for free through the Internet.
On GMA 7’s I-Witness episode Everybody Paparazzi, Howie meets “citizen journalists” who gather news and use this new power to improve the world.
But unfortunately, some are wielding cameras to get back at their enemies — shooting scenes, which should not be recorded at all. Take the case of YouTube star Mikey Bustos, who has used small cameras for years to record his life. Now fans record it for him, and often in places where he’d rather be left alone.
Howie and his documentary team tackle the impact of this phenomenon and the thin line between responsible and irresponsible citizen journalism.
