MANILA, Philippines - Those were the days when popular singing comic duos performed at the former Clover Theater and The Manila Grand Opera House in downtown Manila. There were the likes of Pat Salem and Dinky Doo, the Reycard Duet, and the revered tandem of Dolphy and Panchito.
Now comes a new duo all set to follow in their footsteps. These are the best of friends Nico Fuentes and Dinky Doo, the latter being a son of Dinky Doo Sr. All of these started with the cyber friendship that grew between Nico and Dinky, which resulted in Nico deciding to become a balikbayan to resume his singing career here. Not known to many, Nico has established himself in the Fil-Am community as a singer and producer of shows for the likes of Jun Polistico, Dulce Amor and many others. Nico lived in Michigan for 28 years working as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines. He also had a colorful career as a diplomat and was chief security officer for the Prime Minister of Somalia. He is related to Jovita Fuentes and is a cousin of Toti Fuentes, a noted contemporary composer. Nico is a graduate of Foreign Service at the Lyceum and also used to be a folk singer.
On the other hand, Dinky Doo pursued being a comedian and semi-regular cast of Pepito Manaloto topbilled by Michael V. Dinky is also a singer and recording artist. He inherited his fine voice not just from his dad, but also from his mom, Nita Javier of Tres Dahlias. For a while, he put aside his singing career to help Optical Media Board chairman Ronnie Ricketts in the campaign against film piracy. He is well-liked among showbiz people because he is a trooper and is innately kind.
Nico and Dinky are both natural-born comics aside from being very talented singers, making them a great tandem. You can expect these guys to make it big a comic duo, with recordings and several corporate and out-of-town shows lined up for them this coming Christmas season.
