The Starter Wife on Hallmark

Debra Messing plays a single mom on the TV series.

MANILA, Philippines - How does an ex-wife begin again after a messy break-up with her Hollywood bigwig husband? Find out on The Starter Wife, starring Debra Messing Thursday nights at 10 on Hallmark Channel.

Known for her roles on Will & Grace and in many chick flicks like The Women, Messing was nominated for a Golden Globe award for her role in this hit US drama playing sassy, sexy Molly Kagan, who faces some earth-shattering life events while trying to start life anew.

Molly’s story continues from the popular mini-series of the same name in all brand-new episodes on Hallmark. Molly is seen juggling her new priorities — establishing her own career in her 40s, being a single mom to seven-year-old daughter Jaden, complications from her divorce, and possible new relationships — despite, of course, having just sworn off men.

Messing says it was the success of the original book adaptation, aired in a six-part miniseries, which led to the creation of an entirely new season based on the story.

The show is known for beginning every episode with a fantasy sequence based on a major Hollywood film, which draws in audiences as they look forward to finding out which movie will be featured next. The sequences are part of Molly’s dreams about recent happenings in her life.

The season has fantasy sequences in the mood of blockbuster movies: Mission: Impossible, Castaway, The Godfather and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

Messing says, “The comedy stems from shining a light on the more extreme aspects of Hollywood culture. But I do think that the other half of the show is absolutely relatable, and that’s always been a goal of ours. Women having to start over at 40, becoming a single parent, finding a career — all of these happen everywhere in the world. So there are definitely other reasons to watch than just to get a laugh.”
