CEBU, Philippines - Young eskrimadors from the University of Cebu (UC)-Team Cebu City won gold medals in "The Grand Gathering 2012" world eskrima seminar and tournament yesterday at the City Sports Club-Cebu at the Cebu Business Park.
Four of the seven gold medallists are women ranging from 13 to 17 years old in Jhovine delos Reyes, Mary Grace Lobino, Loryjane Miral and Nicole Angeli Tamayo. The other UC stick-fighters who delivered gilts were Maximo Caballes, Jr., Jonel Pepito and Luke Placyd Galon.
The five-day tilt which will come to a close today is expected to be dominated by foreigners especially the Australians, who are disciples of Supreme Grandmaster Ciriaco "Cacoy" Cañete.
However, the local bets from Cacoy Doce Pares managed to pull a major upset, with Dominic Lavalle defeating Australian GM Vince Palumbo in their gold medal match under the 40-49 years old category.Palumbo is the owner of the International Combative Martial Arts Academy in Adelaide, Australia.
