Young guns, veterans collide in UV scrabblefest

CEBU, Philippines - The 6th University of the Visayas Scrabble Challenge set this Saturday at the multi-media room of UV-Main campus will be a battle between the old and new generation of players.

“This will be a competition among the old and new generation of scrabble players in Cebu as this is open to players of all ages," said Teodoro Martus, the country's No.1 player who is also the defending champion.

The annual tournament is open to all scrabble players either in high school, college or professionals.

Martus is expected tough opposition from Nathalie Cabaluna of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), Dart Eslao, and fellow Visayanian word wizards in Jowar Ayuno and Joy Policher.

Ayuno, Policher and Cabaluna were the country's representatives to the World Youth Scrabble Championships two years ago in Malaysia.

Entry fee is pegged at P200 for college students and professionals and P100 for high school participants.

The registration will be done from 8 to 8:30 am during the contest day.

The champion will pocket P2,500, while the second and third will receive P1,800 and P1, 000, respectively. The fourth and fifth will get P500 and P200.— (FREEMAN)
