Sharing the road

I enjoy playing the sport often referred to as the gentleman’s game. Unfortunately, being good in the game doesn’t assure that one is a gentleman.

It is just a good thing that most of the people I meet going about covering golf and being part of my club’s various working committees are real gentlemen, but there are times when you can’t help but meet a few, who aren’t.

The rainy season has kept me off my bike, but my desire to ride my two leg-powered wheels is always there.

Some of my best days when the weather is fine are started by biking to the mountain barangays near the place where I live in.

It is like reliving my teenage days when biking was the best way to go from one point to another. But as you grow older, you also become wiser and avoid the roads where there are drivers who have little regard for others.

They might not own the road, but insisting on sharing it with them is tantamount to suicide. So, in order to enjoy my bike, I have to look for other roads that those on motorized vehicles are happy to share with us.

Yes let’s share the road, but please only in areas where we don’t affect the lives of thousands and cause more bad than good.

The 7th edition of the Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup opened last Saturday at the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City.

The kids from Carcar City and Argao, who played in the opening match, were a lucky bunch as they got a taste of playing the game in a spectacular venue and in international standards.

More than that, these are very lucky kids because they might just have found the key to a free high school and college education.

The GUV Cup has already helped many volleyball players get free education.

With the declaration of Cebu as the volleyball capital of the country by the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF), the sport has truly arrived in our island.

The Ateneo-La Salle Golf Tournament is happening next Saturday at the Club Filipino Incorporada de Cebu course in Danao City.

I was informed of the press conference yesterday to launch the event, but I was busy with another tournament and missed it.

Anyway, I am calling on those who spent at least two school years in a La Salle school to join the cause of the Greenies as we try once again to beat the Blue Eagles.

The entry fee is pegged at P1,500.
