Dapudong gets shot at WBA title

CEBU, Philippines - A week after his masterful demolition of Indonesian Benja Loemoli, former WBC Silver flyweight champion Edrin “The Sting” Dapudong got a big break that would change his career as is tapped to fight Mexican Hernan “Tyson” Marquez for the WBA flyweight title.

Dapudong (23-3, 13KOs), through ALA Promotions, received the offer to fight for the world championship from Zanfer Boxing Promotions that also indicated that the bout will be held at the Centro de Usos Multiples (CUM) in Hermoso, Mexico this July 2.

This will be Marquez's first defense of the throne he claimed by beating Luis "El Nica" Concepcion last April 2 in Ciudad de Panama.

"It's a great opportunity presented to me in a great moment in my career. I am always training and ready. I know the champion. I saw his fight with Concepcion. He is tough, hard-hitting, very brave, but I also i have many attributes,” said Dapudong in a report by boxingscene.com.

Dapudong and his team led by former North Cotabato Governor and Braveheart Boxing big boss Manny Piñol and ALA Promotions Vice President Dennis Cañete will leave for Mexico on June 27.

“I am a Filipino warrior and I have enough to knock out Tyson. I regret that I am going to spoil the party for the fans in his homeland on July 2," said Dapudong, who is also seeking redemption after losing his WBC Silver belt last year in Mexico against Wilbert Uicab. (FREEMAN)
