CEBU, Philippines - For the first time, the Millennium Park under the Marcelo Fernan bridge will host several sporting events to highlight Lapu-Lapu City’s 50th Charter Day celebration dubbed as "Independent Lapu-Lapu Singkwenta Na" this Friday.
“This is the first time that we’re doing this and only the second time to hold an event at the Millennium Park. It’s going to be a very fun event to remember as we celebrate Lapu-Lapu’s 50th charter day ,” said Councilor Harry Radaza in yesterday’s launching of the event at Hukad restaurant in the Terraces of Ayala Center-Cebu.
Lapu-Lapu became a component city on June 17,1961 and has been classified as a highly-urbanized city in 2007 until it became a lone congressional district last year.
Among the sporting disciplines that will be featured include table tennis, chess and a folding bike contest.
The chess competition involves three classes, the men’s open exclusive for Lapu-Lapu residents, 15-under and the 12-under.
Aside from that, IM Enrico Sevilleno and NM Erik Garcia will figure in an exhibition match.
On the other hand, the folding bike tilt will be classified into different categories based on tire sizes from 12, 14, 16 to 20 inches.
It was also decided by the organizing Cebu Folding Bikes Society that a media category will be included.
More than just a race though, CFBS president Allan Salazar said this is part of their bike tour in support of the clean air act.
Details of the table tennis event have not been revealed yesterday as the person incharge failed to attend the launching due to other pressing matters at the city hall.
Radaza, however, bared that the 'ping-pong' action will be held away from the sea area to avoid the winds.
A variety show and other activities celebrating this big occasion in Lapu-Lapu will also take place. (FREEMAN)
