Running and kung fu

To all who supported last Sunday’s Run UP High, thank you very much for making the event a success!

I was told late Saturday night that a total of 919 had registered for the event. Although a little less than that showed up for the actual event including sports editor Manny Villaruel, who ran in the 6-K category and lifestyle writer Vanessa Balbuena, who joined the 3-K run.

Manny, although not from UP Cebu High School, has a special connection to the school as he spent time there as a teaching intern while he was in college.

Vanessa is a fellow graduate of the high school from a batch that came many years after I received my diploma. We did miss opinion editor Quennie Sanchez-Bronce, who also signed up but did not show up.

It was an experience worth repeating for the many, who joined the event particularly the alumni and our former teachers, who went there to run or even walk for the love of the school.

For the martial arts enthusiasts, here’s something to check out next Saturday, May 14 at the Plantation Bay Resort and Spa – a traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu Seminar to be given by Grandmaster Sergio Iadarola.

I got word about this event many weeks ago from Michelle Varron, who again reminded me recently in an email.

The seminar will be from 1 to 6 p.m.

For those interested or simply curious, you can contact 0927-5176555 on or before May 7 so you can get a seat.

By the way, the lovely Michelle is a student of Kung Fu. She is the program director of the International Wing Tjun Kung Fu Association-Philippines.

The public hearing for the proposed Road Race Ordinance will be held this morning at the Cebu City Hall.

Many running enthusiasts, who I have talked to the past several days, have many ideas to make Cebu City very friendly to the sport of running, but they are also one in believing that the staging of races must be regulated.

It would be interesting to hear their thoughts today and I’m sure the members of the Cebu City Council will get a lot of good inputs.

Running seems to continue to grow as many are picking up the sport each day. One thing they just have to bear in mind is that they must do it properly to really enjoy running.

Yes, it seems so easy to run, but you have to learn to do it right to prevent injuries.

MILESTONES: May 2 is a special day in our family, but we don’t hold any party, we just remember a man, who remains in our hearts even if he has long passed on – my father Nonilon Frasco Quiñones would have been 67 years old last Monday.

Belated birthday greetings to my friends and family, who turned a year older last Monday –my cousin Mic-mic Pace-Yu, my goddaughter Shelamay Montenegro, Y101’s Chassy Cortes, Armi Lou Rovillos, Gungun Giza, Lulu Laurel-Fernandez, Ronald Hipolito, and May Estimo-Viado.

Belated greetings also go to those who celebrated yesterday like my Tao fraternity brothers Tirso Ramon ‘Jinggoy’ Roa and Tracy Tradio, Dr. Rowena ‘Wee’ Burden, Bernard Restificar, Reinier Lapitan, and Gilbey Cleopas.

Today’s greetings go to Conrado ‘Rady’ Abarintos and Madonna Sitoy.
