Almario wins April Monthly Medal at Alta Vista

CEBU, Philippines - Carl Almario led the cast of winners in last Saturday's April Monthly Medal at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club.

Almario made short work of the par-72 course carved on the hills of barangay Pardo with nines of 31 and 38 for a gross score of three-under-par 69, the best in the tournament.

Marlo Cugtas fired a gross 73 and had a net score of 63 to win the lowest net honors for the premiere handicap class. Runner-up honors went to Gabriel Yap, Jr., who had a net score of 64 off a gross two-under-par 70 strokes.

It was one of the best attended monthly medal events of the club with over 120 participating.

The class B lowest gross plum went to Emelio Tan with two-over-par 74 off nines of 35 and 39.

The lowest net honors for class B went to Luis Park with 64 beating two others in the countback.

Runner-up honors went to Rey Dira, who also had a net score of 64 edging Yasunori Hara in the countback.

Alan Larot topped class C with a gross score of 84 strokes.

The lowest net honors for class C went to Romeo Rizarri, who scored a tournament-best 13-under-par 59. Rizarri, who plays with a handicap of 27, had a gross score of 86.

Runner-up honors went to Ed Alegrado with a net score of 64 strokes.

Aside from directors of AVGCC led by Chairman Oly Dychangco, some of the new officers of Cebu Country Club led by president Ramontito Garcia also took part in the event.

During the award rites, Dychangco bared plans of the two clubs to hold a tournament that would be played on two courses.

The seniors' division lowest gross title went to club director Vicente Go with five-over-par 77 strokes.

The lowest net honors went to Loreto Alburo with 66 strokes while runner-up honors went to Jun Zosa with a net score of 67 beating Chandran Rama in the countback.

Tony Sikimhua fired a gross 84 to bag the lowest gross honors for the super seniors' class, which is for players 65 and above. Sikimhua, actually, almost scored his age of 80.

The lowest net honors for the age group went to Ed Sanchez with a net 68.

The lowest gross plum for the ladies division went to Choi Yi Hwa with 79 strokes while Angela Park had the lowest net with 66.

The guest division title went to Tata Callora with a net score of 72 off a gross 88 in the Callaway system. Runner-up honors went to Tedd Almario.

Special prizes were also awarded to Gabriel Yap, Jr. for nearest the pin on hole number 6 and to Vicente Go for the most accurate drive on hole number 11. Yap left 5 feet and 9 inches for a birdie try, while Go's tee shot landed two inches from the center line. — NLQ (THE FREEMAN)
