Sunsport cage clinic draws many entries

CEBU, Philippines - More aspiring hoopsters have registered in the 18th season of Sunsport Basketball Training Camp, which will run from April 4-29 at the Sacred Heart Center Sports Club along D. Jakosalem Street, this city.

Camp organizer Andrew Choachuy said the huge turnout of participants resulted from the parents’ confidence in the camp’s 18 years of experience in training scientific and fundamental skills to young cagers who aspire to become future stars of Philippine Basketball.

Aside from the fundamentals of the game such as proper shooting, dribbling and passing, training camp director and Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology (SCSIT) Skyblazers coach Giovanni “JoJo” Romarate said they will also tackle the technical aspect of the sport including offensive drills and defensive strategies.

The said camp is open to all hoopsters aged at least seven years old.

The campers will not only receive quality training but will also get their money's worth as freebies such as Sunsport basketball 2011 model, bag, t-shirt, practice jersey and more will be given away.

And given the number of trainees, the organizers will also focus on female dribblers as the training starts this summer.

Choachuy said he was overwhelmed by the turnout of female participants last year, which he did not expect.

“I will try to also focus on the female participants this season because with the huge participation last summer, I guess, it’s time to let these girls be given the proper training,” Choachuy said.

He added that he has plans of grouping these girls and let them challenge other teams through a friendly match during the course of the training.

Choachuy also aims at giving proper training and develop these girls, who have great potentials of playing not only in the local scene but also in the national and international level.

Interestingly, the venue’s court features the finest Taraflex flooring, which provides safety cushion to the knee and ankle of the little basketball stars unlike cement/concrete or wooden floorings that can cause serious injury.

The second level of training will take place from May 2 to 27.
