Cebu Fire Run features 'bombero dash'

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Fire Run 2011 features the first of its kind 'bombero dash' where firemen in full fire-fighting gear will run a 200m dash on March 6 at the Ayala Terraces.

Participants of the bombero dash are members of the Cebu Filipino-Chinese Volunteers Fire Brigade (CFCVFB), the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF), members of Barangay Sto. Niño Fire Brigade and the Cebu City Fire Station.

They are required to wear their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that includes the helmet, jacket, trousers (a three-layer thermal gear), gloves and boots. The bombero dash will surely be a must-see category since people will witness firemen running with a complete PPE that weighs 10 kilos and up to 20 kilos when wet.

The said running event differs from the other races as instead of motorcycles, fire trucks will lead the run as avante guards. Safety measures are also applied through the cooperation with barangay tanods and CITOM. Champion runners Mary Grace de los Santos and Jobert Carolino already signed up to join the Cebu Fire Run.

The event is in line with CFCVFB’s 30 years of dedicated service. The proceeds of the run will be used to fund the “Learn not to Burn Program” of the CFCVFB.

The “Learn Not to Burn Program” teaches in a positive, non-threatening way what children and adults need to know about fire and burn prevention.

The Runcheck-managed tilt features three categories:15K, 7.5K and 3K.

Registration fee is pegged at P300 for 15K and P250 for the 7.5K and 3K.

Aside from medals, the top finisher will pocket P7,000, while the second and third placers will get P5,000 and P3,000, respectively.

Entry forms are available at Runnr (Ayala Center Cebu), Philippine Sports Commission office (Cebu City Sports Center), Fitness First and the CFCV Fire Brigade office. (FREEMAN)
