CEBU, Philippines - After introducing the exhilarating edge-coaster and “sky-walking”, Club Ultima is all set for a historic event – the stairs running dubbed the Tower Power Race on February 20 at Crown Regency Hotel and Tower 1 here.
Participants will climb up approximately 880 steps out of the 41-level building.
“When I thought of this event, I was not even aware that it’s like the Empire State Run. I just thought that instead of doing the usual running event why not bank on what we have? Do an event here at Club Ultima,” said Jaq Siwala, events and promotions manager of Club Ultima.
“So this Tower run came in. This is also good for Cebu City as far as tourism is concerned. People get curious and hopefully they would join the race here.”
The event was initially scheduled this Sunday, but runners, athletes from other sports, and fitness buffs in general asked organizers to move the race due to conflict with other events as well as the need to prepare for it.
Organizers said that although athletes especially runners are excited about the race, they are also a bit hesitant to join since they are scared to get injured in the race.
With that, a mock run was held recently by one of their fitness instructors, Alin Tan, who did it in only six minutes from the ground floor up to the 38th floor.
Veteran sky runner, Merlita Arias-Dunkin, for her part, believes that it will be safe for the runners as one only needs to go up and each runner can at his or her own pace.
That as the event is going to be an individually timed event with 15 seconds gap between runners.
The upcoming event is open to all, men and women.
The top five runners of this event will take home exciting prizes from a two-night stay in Crown Regency’s Boracay resort, a specially-designed trophy, Power Gym entry down to a free massage at Prana Medispa.
Registration fee is pegged at P400 for Club Ultima members, P500 for non-members and P450 for group registration with at least 10 members joining the event.
The entry fee entitles the participant to a singlet, light snacks, sky level entry and a sky ride pass.
Deadline for submission of entries is February 17. (FREEMAN)
