CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Sports Commission is looking beyond just organizing, hosting and training athletes for just a short period of time with a plan to put up a sports institute and training center.
The San Nicolas Sports Complex had been identified by the city government as the venue for this training institute.
When this materializes, the CCSC will manage the said facility.
CCSC chairman Edward Hayco said that the sports commission officials feel their roles are only short term, but can help do more even beyond their terms through a sports institute.
With only the Cebu City Sports Center around, it is difficult for the serious athletes to train due to the volume of people using the facility.
Councilor Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba is enthusiastic about the said idea and gave his full support to the said plan. Hopefully, the CCSC would also get the same response from the rest of the city council when they meet in next week’s budget hearing.
The said institute will be the venue for city’s athletes’ regular training.
Before this pushes through, however, the San Nicolas gym still needs to undergo renovations as well as identify what sports will be accommodated in the said training center.
To entice as many potential athletes possible, CCSC will offer the program for free.
CCSC’s agenda this time include talent identification, sports development not only for the popular sports but even the emerging sports, sports tourism and help the region become the National champion in the Palarong Pambansa targeted in 2013. – THE FREEMAN
