CEBU, Philippines - Cebu’s tennis princess Sally Mae Siso pulled off back-to-back wins but had to pass through rough waters before getting rid of separate foes in the Cebu City leg of the Smart-Head tennis competition yesterday at the Cebu Country Club.
Siso topped the girls 16-under and the 18-under classes but the twinkill was not served on a silver platter.
In the 16-under final, Siso literally went through the wringer before grinding through a nerve-wracking 7-6 (7-6), 6-4 victory over Crissan Mae Kintanar.
After a short rest, Siso had to deal with her sister Sallydine and was again pushed to the limit before hacking out a 6-4, 6-3 win to walk away with the 18-under tiara.
Over the weekend, Sally Mae Siso also posted consecutive triumphs through the Lapu-Lapu leg of the same event.
On the other hand, Godfrey Seno ended his bid with a title and a runner-up finish. He ruled the boys 12-under category after wiping out Jaffary Cariga 6-4, 6-3, but fell short of a gold medal finish in the 14-under after bowing to Jeleardo Amazona in lopsided fashion, 6-1, 6-0.
Arthur Craig Pantino claimed the unisex 10-under crown after thrashing Francis Lambayan, 6-1, 6-1,while Zethley Mae Alferez fended off Cherry Mae Toledo, 6-0, 6-2 to romp off with the girls 12-under diadem.
Little-known Jenni Dizon clobbered Chelsea Gacho, 6-3, 6-2 to seize the girls 14-under title, while Fritz Satera easily claimed the boys 16-under plum after a 6-1, 6-1 whipping of Francis Parangan.
RJ Abarquez completed the winners’ list after dumping Kurt Gerapusco, 6-1, 6-0 in the boys 18-under final.
After a one-day rest, Cebu ’s junior netters and a bunch of visiting players will be back in action tomorrow for the Palawan Pawnshop Age-Group tournament here. (FREEMAN NEWS)
