CEBU, Philippines - Even if the 1st Sinulog Jiboren’s Cup is not yet over, another open volleyball competition will take place on January 16-17 at the Pasil Sports Complex dubbed as “Jiboren’s Cup at its Best”.
Catmon, back-to-back women’s champion in the municipal cluster of the Governor Gwen Garcia University Volley Cup and inaugural GUV Cup men’s champion Liloan banner the elite list of competitors in the two-day action.
The Vilma Veloso-mentored Catmon belles will be spearheaded by Methosheena Bate, Athena Sucalit, Catherine Marquez, Lanie Silvestre, Jerymie Montalvo, Gretchel Soltones and Cristy Sucalit.
Liloan of coach Ondo Mosqueda, on the other hand, will count the most from RP Team member Junrey Sasing, former USPF stalwarts Angellan Visoc, Clifford Café, Maynard Alijandrino and James Ryan Rivera, UV team captain Jade Becaldo and his USJ-R counterpart Jackie Yrog-irog.
Surprisingly, Lapu-Lapu City, which failed to join the GUV Cup last year, is one of the first teams to confirm its participation in both men and women’s division of this Jingle Cabasa Leitz-sponsored tournament.
“Sponsoring volleyball tournaments in my place is my way of giving back to Sr. Sto. Niño for all the blessings that I received. I also want the people in Pasil to see the best teams in Cebu as well as appreciate the beauty of volleyball,” said Leitz, a self-confessed fanatic of the sport.
Tournament manager Jessie Yungco said that they have also invited Mandaue and Talisay to join the contest but they receive no confirmation as of the moment.
“We’re also expecting that there will be privately-sponsored teams that will be joining in. The people will surely witness tough competition from highly-skilled players in Cebu,” Yungco said.
The champion will receive P10, 000, while the second and third placers will get P7, 000 and P5, 000, respectively. — Marigold P. Lebumfacil (FREEMAN NEWS)
