Catmon scores 5-0 sweep in GUV Cup

CEBU, Philippines - Defending titlist Catmon consummated a five-game sweep in the municipal cluster quarterfinals of the 5th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup yesterday at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) grounds.

The wards of Vilma Veloso were so dominant in their 25-8, 25-11 annihilation of Boljoon to officially claim the top spot in women's bracket A and move two steps closer from fulfilling their back-to-back championship dream.

Minglanilla, on the other hand, hammered out a 25-20, 20-7 victory over Compostela to advance into the semifinals as second seed in bracket A with a 3-1 win-loss record.

In bracket B, the Liloan belles further pushed themselves to a battle royale with Catmon after they shackled Badian, 25-15, 25-22 to stay unscathed in four starts.

Sta. Fe and Barili are in hot pursuit for the other semifinal ticket with identical 3-1 win-loss marks.

Barili trounced Sogod in straight sets, 25-22, 25-22 to set up a sudden-death duel against Sta. Fe, with the victor joining Liloan into the next round.

In the men’s division, Minglanilla zoomed to the top of bracket B leaderboard with an immaculate 3-0 record after trouncing Compostela, 25-18, 25-18.

Catmon and Moalboal are currently at second place in their respective brackets but they must hurdle their remaining assignments to barge into the final four.

All the top four teams in both divisions will advance into the municipal and city cluster semifinals that will be contested on Saturday. The semis pairings in the city cluster features Mandaue vs. Carcar and Talisay vs. Danao in the women's class and Talisay vs. Carcar and Mandaue vs. Toledo in the men's side.

The survivors will then clash for the triple championship games on Sunday still at the same venue. The overall winner per category will pocket P100,000 cash prize.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
