Z's still lucky

The success of Manny Pacquiao over the weekend has overshadowed the sad fate of Z Gorres in the United States. But this does not mean that Z is unlucky, in fact, he is one very lucky fighter to have a manager and a stable owner, who care for their wards.

We’ve heard of many horrible stories about fighters landing in the hospital that has resulted to hell being raised by some politicians, but as usual once the issue dies, those politicians, who issued statements, would also forget what they said.

What happened to Gorres reminds us of the dangers of taking part in contact sports. It does not however mean that the sport is bad because somebody got hurt. Maybe the fans of Miguel Cotto would feel that way, but not the ecstatic Pinoys and the fans of Pacquiao from different parts of the world.

Let us continue to pray for the quick recovery of Z and the success of our boxers in the international stage.

Since everyone would rather talk about boxing, including the political, business and entertainment columnists, I’d switch to Formula-1 racing, which is also very popular worldwide, but of course not in the same breadth as boxing.

CNN reported that Mercedes has bought a majority share of world champion Brawn GP and the team will be known as Mercedes Grand Prix.

Mercedes has sold its 40 percent stake at McLaren-Mercedes, but will continue to supply engines for the team for the next six seasons.

This latest development could also mean a lot of changes in the team drivers that might even affect current world champion Jenson Button as Mercedes GP is reportedly an all-German line-up of Nico Rosberg and Nick Hiedfeld.

But then there is also a report that McLaren might also have an all-British line-up of Button and last year’s world champion Lewis Hamilton.

There is so much happening in the F-1 that makes the wait for the 2010 season more exciting for the fans.

Honestly, with all the developments, I can’t wait for the 2010 season to start.

Let me go back to boxing.

With the success of Pacquiao, expect many politicians to start training programs in their areas for the young ones to pick up boxing.

While I support such efforts to promote a particular sport in the grassroots level, I hope those who initiate such activities will carefully plan out what they intend to do.

Well, honestly I feel, most of these trainings will be mainly for purposes of election and not really for sports development and I hope that the public would not easily be swayed by these ‘crocodiles’ masquerading as sports patrons.

If you want to develop boxing, have a real program that is sustainable. Manny Pacquiao did not magically turn from a baker into a boxing champion overnight.

MILESTONES: Belated birthday greetings to Atty. Cristina Gabutina, who turned a year older yesterday along with Iris Castillo-Cullar and Rommel Ligayo. The same goes to Rianne Tecson, who celebrated last Monday.

Today’s greetings go to Jade Camacho-Tan, Rex Alenton and Gail Tabanao, who all happen to be my classmates.

More power to all of you!
