CEBU, Philippines - The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) defended its title with flying colors after trouncing the equally-tough University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) in straight sets in the boys secondary division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) volleyball competition yesterday at the USPF gym.
USJ-R of coach Ronald Potot pummeled USPF of coach Cecil Jotojot, 25-21, 25-17, to claim back-to-back championships.
Anchored on the able leadership of team captain Jonathan Clarus, the other key players of USJ-R's resounding conquest of USPF were John Hercopel Pelayo, Jaylevelle Rojas, Kevin Austin Cabiso, James Anthony Asingua and Mark Jason Bongo.
Raymart Nino Canete, Ryan Delmer Fuentes, Kenneth Gesim, Harold Glenn Mauro and Vincent Trangia had an impressive showing for USPF but they eventually wilted under the tenacious defense and powerful attacks of USJ-R.
The Josenians, thus, made up from the loss of their girls counterparts, who were vanquished by the USPF belles of coach Jordan Paca in their titular showdown last Saturday.
“My players showed great performance inside the court. They were emotionally, physically and mentally prepared for this final battle. I’m glad that they were able to get the title against our toughest rival, USPF,” said Potot.
“Although most of my wards will be graduating this year, we are still aiming for a three-peat next year season my young, but tough newcomers,” Potot added.
USPF coach Jotojot, for his part, said: “My players still lack confidence. They were so tensed inside the court. They were not able to execute their plays well, that’s why they failed to counter the attack given by USJ-R.” – Marigold P. Lebumfacil (THE FREEMAN)
