CEBU, Philippines - Tata Llaguno, team owner of Chazyl Mae, scored 16 points, including four treys, to lead his team to a 96-77 shellacking of D’Venci in last Friday’s exhibition game in Barangay Tangke, Naga, Cebu.
The players endured a shabbily cemented court that has no visible scoreboard and electronic timer. The game, nonetheless, lived up to its billing and the crowd that came in droves had a grand time cheering for their squads.
The crowd loudly clapped the moves of former professional and commercial players who reinforced the teams.
Most notable among the reinforcements was Leo Bat-og of the Negros Slashers in the now defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) who played for Chazyl. There was Jimwell Torion a former PBA standout as well.
D’Venci had Felix Duhig, who holds the CAAA record 30 triples in a game, played for Crispa in the PABL and a draftee in the PBA by Alaska. Jerry Jaca, a veteran commercial player, was Duhig’s wingman.
The players went for it despite the substandard playing court and both teams were in a seesaw battle until the third quarter when Chazyl began to pull away.
Chazyl calmly regrouped and won pulling away.
Janno Nuñez, a reserve of the University of the Visayas (UV), topscored for the winners with 18 points. Aside from Llaguno, Toring also had 16 points. Bat-og had eight points while Torion netted six points.
Delos Santos hoisted D’Venci’s colors with 13 points while teammates Ocañada and Abatayo had 12 points apiece. Jaca managed to score eight points. Duhig had six points.
