Guardo boxing resumes in Inayawan tonight

CEBU, Philippines - The Atan Guardo Amateur Boxing Tournament resumes tonight at the Inayawan Sports Complex in Inayawan, this city, with 15 bouts.

The pairings for tonight’s action, however, is still unavailable because boxers will have their weigh-in at the venue itself.

Allan Torrevillas, executive director of the Greater Cebu Sports Organizing Committee (GCSOC) and organizers of the grassroot tournament explained that by having the weigh-in at the venue boxing aficionados would know that the tournament is open to all.

Torrevillas said when they say it’s open to all, they mean it.

Boxers from Talisay, Mandaue, Liloan and other areas in the Cebu province are all set to join the tournament.

Team Cebu City under Coach Efren Tabanas expressed their interest to join the tournament earlier after an invite from GCSOC but Tabanas later begged off because of a prior commitment.

Promising boxers that will be discovered during the tournament will train under Dodong Donaire, the father of world boxing champion Nonito Donaire.

The next stop, after Inayawan, is Mambaling.

Torrevillas told The FREEMAN they learned that an amateur boxing tournament organized by the City government would be held in the same venue, on the same date and schedule. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol   . (THE FREEMAN)
