CEBU - Bull-strong center Joseph Jayme transformed himself into a one-man wrecking crew to power the District Collector’s Office to a 68-56 drubbing of Chamber of Customs Brokers, Inc. (CCBI) in the 35-Above category of the 4th Collector’s Cup basketball tournament at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.
Jayme, a hulking and unstoppable stalwart of coach Atty. Paul Alcazaren, decided to pick up the scoring cudgels of his team after they were trailing by 10 points at halftime, 24-34.
Sensing danger but confident of turning the tables on CCBI, Jayme made himself available both at the center and point guard positions just to save the day of the Collector’s Office under District Collector Ricardo Belmote.
Jayme topscored for the Collector’s Office with 23 points, most of them in the fourth period capped by a three-pointer in the dying seconds of the contest. He was aptly supported by Jun Borromeo with 10 points, including a layup that pulled them to within two points, 43-45, at the end of the third period.
Jayme scored the go-ahead basket, 49-47, midway in the final canto - a lead they protected and even padded to 12 points at the final buzzer.
After Andy Gerundio and Mario Gaquing’s crucial baskets at the start of the payoff period, Jayme scored 14 consecutive points to vault the Collector’s Office to victory, which was already in their back after taking a 62-53 advantage with 43 seconds left to play.
The Collectors Office are gunning for a 2-0 lead when they take on the Port Operations Division (POD) tonight.
