CEBU - The University of Cebu (UC), the Abellana National School-manned Unit IX and Unit VI emerged as champion in their respective divisions yesterday at the conclusion of the 18th Cebu City Olympics at the Cebu City Sports Center.
The powerhouse UC Webmasters snatched an unassailable 29 golds, 19 silvers and nine bronzes to stay undefeated in the colleagiate division. UC got most of their golds from athletics, arnis and swimming events.
Southwestern University (SWU) and Cebu State College of Science and Technology (CSCST) occupied the second and third spots, respectively.
SWU garnered 22 golds, 10 silvers and 16 bronzes, while CSCST collected 20 gold, 17 silver and 21 bronzes medals.
It was a sudden twist of fate in the secondary division, with Unit IX, powered mostly by ANS athletes, dethroned Unit V.
Unit V was ahead in the penultimate day of action, but ANS succeeded in overtaking them - thanks to its girls volleyball team’s second-place finish behind the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) comprising Unit VI.
With that, Unit IX’s total points was elevated to 248, narrowly beating Unit V which compiled 239.5 markers. Baseball, chess, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, gymnastics, volleyball were accounted for most of Unit IX’s points.
Unit IV settled on the third place with 180.1 points.
In the elementary level, Unit VI ended the multi-sporting event on top of the heap with 186 points. They ruled the badminton, arnis, swimming, gymnastics, and taekwondo events.
Last year’s champion Unit V settled only for second place this time with 174 points, while Unit 1 wound up third with 171 markers.
Unit VI is composed of Lahug Elementary School (ES), Camputhaw ES, Malubog ES, Busay ES, Sirao ES, University of the Philippines, Paref Springdale, University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF)- Mabini and Lahug campus, Living Word Christian Learning Center, Demedex Catholic School , Visayan Nazarene Bible College and Cebu International Distance Education. – FREEMAN NEWS
