CEBU - Unit 1 and Unit VII ruled Karatedo and gymnastics events at the resumption of the 16th Cebu City Olympics yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Unit I hauled seven gold medals on the opening of Karatedo competition in the elementary division. Unit VII, on the other hand, won four medals as gymnastics competition starts.
Garaldine Gemao and Ruthie Ann Alonzo of Basak Community School ruled the U-7 and 8-9 years old categories to lead Unit I’s dominance. Greg Christian Cabrera of Tisa Elementary School, Mon Andrei Cabanit of Punta Princesa Elementary School also won golds in the boys division.
Gemao proceeded to win her second gold medal by winning the kumite competition. Cabrera joined Gemao as double gold medal winners by ruling his age group in the same competition. Niña Albaracin also of Tisa Elementary School grabbed another gold medal for Unit I after winning her match in the girls 8-9 years division.
John Paul Dimaano of Colegio dela Immaculada Concepcion prevented Unit I from sweeping the Karatedo competition as he grabbed the gold in Kumite for Unit V.
Milo MOA Jojelyn Tracy Badonio led Unit VII’s rampage in elementary gymnastics by winning gold in rope and ball events. Badonio then joined hands with Jamela Mea Moga and Jowena Almeriz to win Unit VII’s fourth medal in the team event.
In the secondary division, Unit V bagged two gold medals courtesy of former Palaro standout Ma. Carmelli Garovillo of Formation School and Kiddies Learning Center. Garovillo, dominated the ball and rope events, but bowed to Karen Sthea of Unit VII, in the hoop competition.
The trio of Jeslyn Deborra Entice, Francoise Mae Labra and Reyna Mae Gacho ruled the team competition to give Unit IX a gold medal. — Marigold P. Lebumfacil (THE FREEMAN)
