SAC's big week

The members of the Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC) are still on cloud 9 after two major events last week.

The very successful SAC-Hapee Sports Quiz at the Ayala Center Cebu last Saturday was one of the two. The other was the victory over the GMA team in a basketball exhibition match last Wednesday.

The basketball event has been well-written about because for the first time, the SAC-Thirsty team quenched it thirst for a win with that come-from behind whacking of GMA.

The sports quiz, on the other hand, was a blast. While it may not have moved as smoothly as we hoped it would, but then the rough edges were nothing that we could not address in the next edition of the competition.

We are actually eagerly looking forward to that despite a few last-minute pull outs, but we had a big number of entries and a very excited crowd that watch the competition.

The crowd also got a share of the action as Hapee basketballs were give away to those who could answer questions that we threw to the audience.

To all SAC members and most specially our sponsors – Hapee Toothpaste and Richmedia Inc., it was a lot of fun doing that event last weekend.

After De la Salle’s loss to Ateneo in two games in the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) collegiate basketball finals, I knew that the taunting would not end after the celebrations would die down.

Ateneo has one year bragging rights and the only way La Salle can take it away is if it wins the title next season.

While the rivalry has spurred a lot of interest from both Ateneans and La Sallians (or La Sallites for those older), many some have overdone it.

What I don’t like is how some people (from both sides) have gone out of their way to make the whole thing stink like the Inayawan Sanitary Landfill that is already filled beyond its capacity.

I’m sure we won’t have the same problem in the coming La Salle-Ateneo Golf Tournament in Cebu though and I look forward to that.

MILESTONES: Belated birthday greetings to my Tao Botherhood and Sisterhood bro, Atty. Uldarico M. Mejorada II, provincial board member of the 2nd District of Zamboanga del Norte, who turned a year older yesterday.

Birthday greetings go to former The Freeman sportswriter Mary Rose Javier, who is now a teacher in Thailand. Rose is turning a year older today.

More power to both of you! To Board Member Ricky, I’d like to borrow your campaign slogan – Padayon ang kakugi!
