4th GUV Cup v'ball blasts off this am

CEBU - The fourth season of the Governor Gwen Garcia University Volleyball (GUV) Cup will kick off today at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex with complete participation from all cities and municipalities comprising the province of Cebu.

From 38 participants in 2005, the number of entries rose to 52 this year - a realization of GUV Cup’s primordial objective.

“This is a dream come true for CEVA (Cebu Volleyball Association). Governor Garcia gave to us that objective and at last, it is now realized,” said Nona Catipay of CEVA.

Catipay added that all the matches under the city cluster will be played in Bogo through the support of Mayor Celestino E. Martinez, Jr.

There will be six provincial clusters with two sub-clusters including Bantayan Island for Cluster IV and Camotes Island for Cluster V.

To spice up the opening ceremony which will start at 9 am, the “Garbo sa GUV CUP” awards will be handed out by no less than Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia.

The second batch of honorees who are now enjoying athletic scholarships in their respective schools are Ma. Cristina Lavador (Danao City), Melissa Ramayla (Ronda), Mytha Bounsit (Borbon), Norina Castro (Tuburan), and Rapril Aguilar (Samboan).

The rest who will be feted are national referees Jerry Winnona Catipay, Juditha Bonita, Janeth Ponte, Lo Oliver Garcia, Jesse Yungco, Rolando Pepito and Jesmar Ganancial.

Special awards will also be given away including the Best in Uniform and the farthest team to arrive first.

In today’s non-bearing games, Catmon will mix it up with Liloan, which proceeded into the provincial championship last year, while Manadaue will take on Lapu-Lapu - THE FREEMAN
