Can’t get enough of golf

Last week, I wrote about two golf tournaments happening one after another in Cebu this month.  I was very wrong.

There are actually six events that would be held very close to each other in this golfing month of June until early July.  I learned about all the other events while checking out the trophies at Stock R Us with Victor ‘Captain’ Gocela.

Tomorrow and Friday will be the 1st Amo Cup at Alta Vista, which is a two-day, 18-hole tournament using the Modified Stableford Scoring System.

The awards ceremony will be on Friday at the Grand Convention Center.

On Saturday and Sunday, there will be a Quarterly Medal Tournament at Club Filipino in Danao City, which will be an 18-hole strokeplay event.  The awards ceremony will be on Sunday at the Club Filipino clubhouse located at the 16th floor of the Ayala Life-FGU Building.

On June 14 and 15, Cebu Country Club holds the President’s Cup, which will be a 36-hole tournament.

A few days after this, the Y101 Corporate Cup will be held in the same golf course.  This will be on the 19th and 20th and will be a four-man team event.  I still have to get more details about the tournament, but just like last year, many are looking forward to this one.

On June 24, the Business in Golf (BiG) Tournament will be held also at Cebu Country Club.  This is the golf event of the Cebu Business Month celebration organized by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

We’ll have over a week to relax after that then there is the View Invitational, Alta Vista’s member-guest tournament on July 3 to 6.

Golf surely is well and alive here and I need not say more.

In relation to the Centennial celebration of the University of the Philippines, there are some sporting events being organized by the UP Cebu High School Alumni Association.

There is an inter-batch basketball tournament that would be held at the UP covered court (take note older batches this does not have a wooden flooring) on July 12 and 13.

This is organized by two members of high school class 2000 – Julius Marco Albeza and Gaylonr Tingzon.

The organizers said that different classes can combine to form a team and must pick a color for their uniform.  If your team wants sky blue as your color, you’ll have to look for another one as that has been reserved by class 1995, according to the email sent out.

There is also a seven-a-side football tournament spearheaded by the UP Alumni Football Club on July 12 and 13.

Teams for this competition must be according to high school batch, but several batches can combine to form one team.

There would also be an exhibition match on the 12th between the ladies team on the high school and college alumni.

The email also announced that there would be a golf tournament.  I’m supposed to be in charge of this, but the details will have to be finalized.

I suggest that golfers, who are UP High School alumni, contact me so we can plan this out.

I can count only a few so far, but I’m sure there are many others there, who also golf.
