Young Builders ’91 and Castrol ’96 chalked up their second straight wins in the semifinal round of the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association’s 10th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup on Tuesday night at the City Sports Club-Cebu gym.
Class ’91 displayed great teamwork in booting out VAG Trading ’94, 70-58, while Class ’96 employed tough defense to shackle Henkel Philippines ’95, 55-50.
With similar 2-0 slates, Class ’91 and Class ’96 needed only one more victory to advance into the division finals.
Juan Borromeo, Jr. cashed in 17 points, while Tommy Yu and Chester Benedict Go chipped in 13 and 10 markers, respectively, for Class ’91, which kept Class ’94 at bay since taking an early 19-14 lead.
The Young Builders-backed squad outscored Class ’94 in the final half, 37-29, to seal the 12-point romp.
Class ’94 was without star center Wellington Yu, who served his one-game suspension for challenging the referee to a fistfight. Bronzon Peña topscored with 20 points followed by Stanley Gaw with 15 but they couldn’t pick up the slack left by Yu.
In the other game, Jennis “Yao Ming” Lim scattered 15 points and Shaun Christopher Wang added 10 markers as Class ’96 gamely overhauled a 22-30 deficit at halftime.
Class ’96 rallied back in the third period, 15-7, and then closed the match with an 18-13 bang to turn the table on Class ’95.
Dean Dy Teves topped Class ’95 with 14 points. The missing link was top gunner Donald Anthony Ting who was held off to a season-low 10 points. Joseph James Yu and Erwin Ong also had 10 markers apiece in a losing cause.
