Henkel Philippines ’95 had to go through a five-minute extension before edging out First ACY 2006, 80-76, in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association’s 10th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup on Thursday night at the City Sports Club-Cebu gym.
With a 9-1 win-loss record at the end of the classification round, Class ’95 will proceed into the crossover quarterfinals as the No.2 seed in Division II. Thus, it will enjoe twice-to-beat incentive over the seventh-ranked squad in their bracket.
The game was very close even in overtime, but the Class ’95 mainstays capitalized on theirvast experience and hardcourt maturity to avert what could have been an embarrassing defeat from the upset-seeking younger graduates.
Donald Anthony Ting topped Class ’95 with 23 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Dean Dy Teves banged in season-highs 21 points, 19 rebounds, and three blocks followed by Erwin Ong with 20 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Junwynn Dy fired a season-best 33 points and a career-high 10 steals on top of nine rebounds and five assists in a breakout performance to remember but his party was somehow spoiled as Class 2006 ended its campaign with a 3-6 win-loss card. Nolsie John Cisneros finished with 26 markers, three steals and two assists.
In a non-bearing match, Chester Enterprises ’82/83 preyed on the ice-cold showing of Chester Cokaliong to edge out Shell ’78/85, 55-46. The loss did not matter though as Class ’78/85 (4-3) is already assured of the No.4 spot in Division I with Class ’82/83 (5-2) as the third seed.
Stephen Tan paced Class ’82/83 with 23 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocks. Wilson Yu led Class ’78/85 with season-highs 20 points, 17 rebounds, three steals and two blocks in a losing effort.
