The seventh edition of the San Carlos Boys High Alumni Basketball Association (SCBHABA) opens this Sunday, February 3, with seven teams seeing action at the USC North Campus gym along Gen. Maxilom Avenue, this city.
The seven teams representing different batches are Batch of 1980, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987 and a composite team from Batch of 1970 and 1981.
Jingjing Gacayan, spokesman for Batch of 1970, and a member of the Cebu Professional Basketball Association (CEPBA), told The FREEMAN the organizers allowed the merger because the two batches don’t have enough alumni to form separate teams.
With the two batches combining forces, Gacayan further said that they now have a better chance of vying for the title and maybe considered the darkhorse of the tournament.
The team will be known as ’70-’81 Gems with Gemmary Pawnshop as its sponsor. Paul Abais (a former USJ-R Jaguar) will be the team’s skipper, with Jingjing Gacayan, Bernie Villarosa, Jojie Gelbolingo, Audie Medina, Roel Monterroyo, Dean Wong, Raul Saburnido, Reggie Caballero, Dennis Serrato, Jess Cavalida and Cesar Briones.
The Batch of 1970 has not placed better than third place in the past staging of the tournament. (GGM)
