Members of the Cebu football and Judo delegation to the Philippine Olympic Festival National Finals will be honored as “Outstanding Individuals” during the city’s charter day celebration next February.
City councilor Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem, a commissioner of the Cebu City Sports Commission and chairman of the city’s sports committee, will make sure this will happen.
“I don’t think anyone will object to it considering their great achievement and the honor they’ve given to Cebu City,” Jakosalem told The FREEMAN.
Jakosalem said he would be making a strong recommendation that the football team and the victorious members of the judo team be given the award.
Team Cebu beat Iloilo 1-0 in the 15-under final with the late-game heroics of Rikki De Guzman of Don Bosco College. The win is a big one considering that Iloilo is the cradle of football in the country.
On the other hand, the judo team brought home four medals: a gold, a pair of silvers and bronze.
Joaquin Nicolo Fernandez won the judo team’s gold medal when he ruled the 13-15 division of the Philippine Judo Youth Championship while teammate Allan Antigua won silver.
The Judo team’s other silver and bronze medals were courtesy of Vicente Fernandez III, elder brother of Joaquin and Antigua in the Philippine Olympic Festival competitions.
