Fiel is April's best in CEPCA monthly

Perci Fiel subdued Mike Banibane to complete a five-game sweep and win the April edition of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) monthly tournament.

Fiel finished the five-round Swiss system competition with a perfect scored of 5.0 points.

Mandy Baria, Banibane, Benjie Sanchez and Dante Arguelles were locked up in a four-way logjam, but Baria took the second place honors by virtue of a superior tie-break output of 17.5 points applying the Bucholz system.

Banibane settled for third, while Sanchez, who defeated El Labunog in the final round, landed at fourth. Argulles, who ended his quest with a victory over Rene Casia, completed the top five finishers.

Meanwhile, Cebu's top chess players will converge for another mind-draining action with the staging of the Rose Pharmacy and Pyro Works Open Chess Tournament billed as "Kay Sarap Magmahal" from April 22-23 at SM City-Cebu in front of Wellcom.

Participants of the tournament, which follows a seven-round Swiss system format, will be given 25 minutes each with an increment of 10 seconds.

The champion will receive P3,000, while the second and third will pocket P2,000 and P1,000, respectively. The fourth and fifth will get P600 and P400, while the sixth to 10th placers will each receive a consolation prize of P200.

Registration fee is pegged at P100. For inquiries, interested parties may call tournament arbiter Marvin Ruelan at 412-1076.
