CJ Sereno in Cebu today

CEBU, Philippines - Newly-installed Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno will be in Cebu today to speak before Regional Trial Court judges at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).

She will also attend the launching of the Justice on Wheels in Mandaue City.

Lawyer Earl Bonachita, president of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), said the Justice on Wheels is to help fast track the disposal of cases.

Judge Ester Veloso, spokesperson of the RTC judges in Cebu City and Regional Director of the Philippines Women Judges Association said they welcome Sereno.

“It is an honor for all women judges like me that, at last, a woman has been appointed as chief justice,” she said.

Veloso said the appointment of Sereno was “indeed historic.”

She added they hope that Sereno will continue to protect and maintain the independence of the judiciary.

“We assured her of our continued support,” she said.

Sereno, 52, was appointed as the 24th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in August this year.

She will be rendering her services for 18 years as she will retire at 70.

She is the first female chief magistrate in the history of SC.

Sereno replaced former Chief Justice Renato Corona, who was impeached by the Senate in a historic vote of 20-3 after a four-month trial that started in January this year.

Corona was impeached for falsifying the figures in his statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).MBG (FREEMAN)
